Looking for a picture-perfect adventure that will take you all across our marvelous metro? The Go Explore KC Murals Tour makes for an awesome day trip through the colorful side of KC, showcasing street art in the ‘burbs all the way up into the city. It’s perfect for a day-date or a friend or family excursion to snap some pics and celebrate your love of Kansas City itself, our sports glory, creativity, diversity, and more! While you’re at it, let us show you which nearby hot spots to hit up for some satisfying sips or delicious bites. You can even double-up on the Go Explore KC bonuses, as some of the murals are near to locations on our other tours!
Start in the suburbs
If you’re coming from the Missouri side: Start at the Be Yourself mural in Lee’s Summit by Fossil Forge Design. Pretend like you’re grabbing ahold of the balloon bouquet and snap a pic as you “float away” and celebrate being uniquely-you! When you’re done admiring the street art, make your way to Poppy’s Ice Cream and Coffee House, only a short walk away! Grab some artisan ice cream or aromatic coffee and be sure to check-in on the Sweet Treats Go Explore KC Tour for your 2-for-1 special!
If you call the Kansas side home: Start at the 10,000 Villages street art in downtown Overland Park. This display celebrates diverse women and was funded by the children of Jeanne Stephens and Lee Blackmar in memory of their mother’s outstanding service to women. Painted by artist JT Daniels and sponsored by InterUrban ArtHouse, this street art adorns the streets of the quaint corner of downtown OP where you’ll find cute shops, coffee, bakeries, restaurants and more. Peek in the 10,000 Villages store on the corner to check out the stores’ supply of products from artisans around the world.
Next stop: Waldo and Brookside
Before you hit downtown, check out the street art and grab a bite at some delicious stops in Waldo and Brookside!
The Well in Waldo is a city-wide favorite, especially it’s expansive all-season rooftop patio. Check out the large Well That Was Fun art on the side of the building by Adé Hogue, and pop in for a bite or a beer.
Just a 6-minute drive from the last street art, and you’ll find the Pegasus mural by KC street artist D. Scribe Ross, representing the logo for the Flying Horse Taproom in Brookside. This locally owned neighborhood flatbread kitchen and taproom serves 30+ taps of local KC craft brews along with wines from around the world. Dine-in, or enjoy a meal on the patio!
Wind your way to Westport
Journey to the Wesport Ale House to find the fan-favorite Mahomes Mural, sure to be popular this summer as we celebrate the long-term signing of our favorite quarterback, Patrick Mahomes! This street art was designed by Sike Style Industries to depict Mahomes as the larger-than-life beloved KC QB, and to mark the 100th year of NFL football and 60 years of Chiefs football. Huge thanks to Community American Credit Union and the Chiefs as title sponsors of the mural! Take advantage of this perfect photo-op with a posterized Pat and then pop into the Ale House for some sips or eats.
The Downtown Districts
The murals in this portion of town are all located within close proximity, so you can zip around from site to site with ease!
Your next stop will be the fabulous Maker Mural on Madison, designed by Made in KC’s in-house graphic designer, Grace Cantril. Made in KC is a metro go-to for local goods, gifts, apparel and more. The colorful mural showcases several different makers who contribute products to Made in KC, such as much-adored Charlie Hustle, Ocean & Sea, Happy Habitat, Flint & Field, Ampersand Design Studio, and The Object Enthusiast.
Next, head over to Delphinium Salon on Southwest Blvd to see the You Are Beautiful KC street art. This lovely message mounted on a luscious green wall complements the salon’s light, relaxing and airy natural feel, and makes for a perfectly uplifting photo backdrop!
In the heart of the Crossroads, the iconic Kansas City I’m so in Love mural looms large above the city streets. It’s a perfect place to show your favorite city some love by snapping a pretty pic and sharing on your social! Designed by Ruthie Becker, this mural is located on the exterior of Imagine That, a Crossroads art studio that caters to artists with developmental disabilities.
Ready to fill your cup or your belly? Taps on Main and Buffalo State Pizza Co. are just a short walk away, and both are on the Go Explore KC Take Out Tour, so you can score some awesome specials with your membership! Relax with a brew from one of the 40 taps from the Pour Your Own Beer Wall at Taps on Main and order deliciously gourmet bar food, or try some old school New York-style pizza at Buffalo State!
After your beer or slice, head to the street art Strong Women Lift Each Other Up on Baltimore Ave, which celebrates Women in Sports. Designed by Midtown Signs, it’s the perfect place for a pic with a favorite lady in your life.
Nearby on Oak St., you’ll find the Crossroads Kansas City Royals Mural, where you can celebrate our summer boys in blue in front of the street art by Brian SCENARIO Fraser. That glorious 2015 World Series still feels like yesterday, after all!
Speaking of sports and glory, if soccer is your game, head right over to West 17th to the Sporting KC Mural “for the glory and for the city,” designed by the awesome Midtown Signs in partnership with Sporting KC to celebrate our 2013 MLS Champs.
If you find yourself in need of an afternoon boost, make your next mural the beautiful I Love You Like a Summer Night on Grand Blvd, by Abby Yemm, right behind Messenger Coffee Co. The gorgeous colors and joyful message will lift your spirits and the Messenger Coffee will perk up your energy. Messenger Cafe also serves mouth-watering Ibis Bakery treats, which you can enjoy on their rooftop patio.
